Walking the Coast of Cornwall

Walking the Coast of Cornwall

Whether you are looking for rugged, Atlantic-facing clifftops or the quieter, wooded paths along the estuary, the stretch between Polzeath and Wadebridge offers some of the best walking in North Cornwall.

Pentire headland walk

Pentire Point and The Rumps Circular Route

This 5 mile moderate walk takes you out onto a wild, exposed headland. Leaving Polzeath, the Southwest Coast Path climbs along the cliffs, offering expansive views back across horizon. As you head round Pentire Point, the view opens dramatically across the mouth of the Camel Estuary. Continuing along the path, you will reach The Rumps, a striking, twin-forked promontory that looks like a sleeping dragon stretching into the Atlantic. Watch out for the offshore island, Mouls often called Puffin Island, is a haven for breeding seabirds like puffins and kittiwakes.

Birdseye view of daymer bay

Polzeath to Daymer Bay & St Enodoc

For a gentler, 4 mile sheltered walk, head south along the coast path from Polzeath toward the Camel Estuary. The trail hugs the low cliffs, passing the quieter rocky coves of Greenaway before dropping down onto the vast, golden sands of Daymer Bay. From the beach, a path cuts inland through the sand dunes and golf course to St Enodoc Church. You can return via the dunes or retrace your steps along the coast.

camel trail walking

Estuary & Inland Walks Around Wadebridge

The 5.5-mile stretch from Wadebridge to Padstow hugs the edge of the wide Camel Estuary, making it a spectacular route for birdwatchers. You can spot egrets, curlews, and oystercatchers feeding on the mudflats. If you choose to head inland toward Bodmin instead, the trail changes character entirely, winding through deep, shaded broadleaf woodland alongside the freshwater river.

port quin harbour

Port Quin to Polzeath

A spectacular, rugged stretch of the Southwest Coast Path designed for seasoned walkers who love a dramatic Atlantic backdrop. Starting from the quiet, atmospheric inlet of Port Quin, the trail guides you past the cliff-edge and down into the secluded, golden sands of Epphaven Cove and Lundy Bay. As you navigate the rocky coastline, you'll cross The Rumps and round the breathtaking expanse of Pentire Point before descending into the vibrant surf haven of Polzeath.
